Buffalo Bills

My All Time Favorite Buffalo Bills Players

As one of the original AFL teams in the early ’60s, the first few decades of Bills football was defined by solid players, yet they lacked the playoff results to be seriously considered one of the NFL’s premier teams. Players like Jack Kemp, Cookie Gilchrist, and O.J. Simpson spearheaded those high flying Bills of the franchise’s early years. With a combination of hitting the jackpot on high draft picks, shrewd trades and a seasoned head coach in Marv Levy, the Buffalo Bills were an elite team in the NFL during the 1990’s appearing in four consecutive Super Bowls.

Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith and Andre Reed are considered by many to be the best Bills ever. Ultimately, these players never were able to capture that elusive Super Bowl title, The run of success that these BIlls players were a part of are looked back fondly by Bills fans. These Bills greats are still revered and popular in western New York. Despite the lack of a championship, it doesn’t take away that they are considered some of the greatest Buffalo Bills in history. There are many Hall of Fame or future Hall of Fame players, who have worn the Bills uniform.

Since then, the Bills have gone to four Super Bowls and have a plethora of Hall of Fame players from Billy Shaw, to O.J. Simpson, to Jim Kelly, to Thurman Thomas.

NICKNAME

  • Buffalo’s team in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) in 1946 was the Bisons. In 1947 a contest was held to rename the team, which was owned by James Breuil of the Frontier Oil Company. The winning entry suggested Bills, reflecting on the famous western frontiersman, Buffalo Bill Cody. Carrying the “frontier” theme further, the winning contestant further offered that the team was being supported by Frontier Oil and was “opening a new frontier in sports in Western New York.” When Buffalo joined the new American Football League in 1960, the name of the city’s earlier pro football entry was adopted.
