2013 NFL Week 13 Review

WEEK 13 REVIEW

The 10-1 Seattle Seahawks came to play when they faced the 9-2 New Orleans Saints at home in Week 13. The entire first quarter was dominated by the Seahawks scoring a 22 yard field goal half way through the quarter. Less than 1 minute later they scored again on a fumble recovery from 22 yards out. With 1:55 left in the first quarter, Russell Wilson connected with Zach Miller for a 2 yard touchdown and the Seahawks led the Saints 17-0.  The Saints were able to drive the ball in the second quarter and Drew Brees connected with Jimmy Graham from 2 yards out giving the Saints a touchdown and what would be their only score of the game.  The Seahawks dominated the ball for the rest of the game scoring a field goal and 2 more touchdowns handing the New Orleans Saints their third loss of the season and taking the Seattle Seahawks to 11-1 and the best record in the NFL with the Playoffs looking like they will be going through Seattle this year.

The New England Patriots faced off with the Houston Texans in a game thought to be dominated by the Patriots.  In the first quarter, Ben Tate scored from 8 yards out and the Texans were up 7-0. Randy Bullock added to their lead by kicking a 43 yard field goal with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter.  Tom Brady marched the ball down the field and connected with his favorite target, Rob Gronkowski for a 23 yard touchdown and the quarter ended with the Texans leading 10-7.  After going back and forth in the second quarter, Ben Tate ran the ball in from 20 yards giving the Texans a 17-7 lead at half time.  Early in the third quarter, James Develin ran in a touchdown from 1 yard out and the score was 17-14.  A few minutes later, Tom Brady was connected with Shane Vereen from 9 yards out and the Patriots got their first lead of the game.  The Texans countered with a touchdown of their own with a 5 yard run by Quarterback Case Keenum from 5 yards and the third quarter ended with the Texans on top again 24-21.  Shortly into the fourth quarter, LeGarrette Blount scored a touchdown from 7 yards out and the Patriots were on top again 28-24.  Two minutes later, the Texans scored a touchdown of their own when Ben Tate ran in his 3rd of the day from 10 yards putting the Texans up 31-28.  In pure Patriots fashion, Tom Brady moved the team into field goal position and they were able to tie the game with a 53 yard field goal from Stephen Gostkowski with 7:16 remaining in the game.  The Texans were unable to capitalize on their next drive and punted and the Patriots were able to connect on another 53 yard field goal from Gostkowski putting the Patriots in the lead 34-31 and giving them their 9th win of the season.

The Denver Broncos faced the Kansas City Chiefs for the second time in 3 weeks, this time in Kansas City.  The Chiefs scored first on a 17 yard pass from Alex Smith to Junior Hemingway.  In the second quarter, Peyton Manning connected with Eric Decker for 41 yards tying up the game at 7.  On the ensuing kick off, Knile Davis ran back the Bronco kick off 108 yards for a touchdown which was the longest ever in Chiefs history.  A few minutes later, the Chiefs scored again with a 12 yard reception by Anthony Fasano giving the Chiefs a 21-7 lead.  Knowshon Moreno scored a 3 yard touchdown with a pass from Manning with 4:16 left in the first half.  The Broncos took the kickoff in the second half and marched down the field and capped off the drive with a 37 yard pass to Eric Decker tying up the game at 21.  Decker scored another touchdown in the third quarter from 15 yards out and the Broncos led the Chiefs 28-21 at the end of three quarters.  The Broncos scored again early in the fourth quarter with another pass from Peyton Manning to Eric Decker giving Decker his 4th touchdown of the game and the Broncos a 35-21 lead.  Eric Decker had a huge day catching 8 passes for 174 yards and 4 touchdowns averaging 21.8 yards per reception.  The Chiefs were able to put another score on the board with a 1 yard run from Jamaal Charles but ended up losing at home 35-28 and giving the Broncos a distinct advantage in the Playoff picture at 10-2 and winning both division games against the Chiefs.

2013 NFL Week 12 Review

WEEK 12 REVIEW

The 14th meeting of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady topped the headlines in Week 12 in a game that started out with Denver scoring 17 unanswered points in the first quarter with Von Miller scoring a defensive touchdown and Knowshon Moreno scoring on offense with a field goal thrown in for good measure.  In the second quarter, an old favorite of Peyton Manning, Jacob Tamme caught a 10 yard touchdown pass.  The weather was cold in New England which caused a lot of issues with holding onto the ball and both teams had their share of mishaps. Peyton Manning seemed to have issues throwing the cold ball and Denver reiled on the legs of Knowshon Moreno for a bulk of the duties as he ran the ball 37 time for 224 yards and a touchdown.  The second half was driven mainly by Tom Brady who seemed to have no issues with the cold ball as he threw 2 touchdowns, one to Julian Edelman and one to Rob Gronkowski along with Brandon Boldens 1 yard run for touchdown.  At the end of 3 quarters the score was Denver 24 and New England 21.  The fourth quarter had Tom Brady throwing a 14 yard pass to Julian Edelman and a 31 yard field goal from Stephen Gostkowski.  Peyton Manning was able to complete an 11 yard pass to Demaryous Thomas  to tie the game at 31 and force an overtime battle. The Broncos got the ball first and were unable to score and the Patriots followed suit.  With 3 minutes left in the overtime, the New England Patriots punted the ball and due to a late decision by former Patriot Wes Welker to not field the ball, let the ball bounce and it hit a Denver Broncos player and the Patriots recovered the ball in field goal position. The Patriots kicked the game winning field goal 2 plays later.

In a game that boasted 8 lead changes, the San Diego Chargers were able to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs and hand them their second loss of the 2013 season. After a Charger field goal, Donnie Avery put the Chiefs on the board with a 32 yard reception for touchdown from Alex Smith. In the second quarter, Jamaal Charles ran in a touchdown from 7 yards out. The Chargers countered with a touchdown of their own from Danny Woodhead. Trailing the Chiefs 14-10 at the half, the Chargers were able to capitalize on their first possession with a 1 yard touchdown run from Ryan Matthews to take the lead 17-14. Just 3 minutes later, Jamaal Charles ran in for his second touchdown of the day putting the Chiefs back on top 21-17. The Chargers quickly moved the ball again and Danny Woodhead ran in a touchdown from 3 yards out.  The Chiefs countered scoring another touchdown just 2 minutes later and regaining the lead 28-24 going into the fourth quarter. The Chargers opened up with a 30 yard Nick Novak field goal and the Chiefs countered with one of their own from 25 yards. Less than 2 minutes later, Ladarius Green caught a 60 yard pass from Philip Rivers putting the Chargers up once again 34-31.  With 1:22 remaining in the game, Dwayne Bowe caught a 5 yard pass from Alex Smith and put the Chiefs ahead once again 38-34. The Chargers who had moved the ball with rapid fire precision all game took the remaining 1:22 and moved the ball without fail and Philip Rivers was able to complete a 26 yard touchdown pass to Seyi Ajirolulu with just 24 seconds remaining in the game and capped the Chargers win at 41-38 handing the Chiefs their second loss this season.

2013 Week 11 Review

WEEK 11 REVIEW

The battle for #1 in the AFC West was waged between the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs and the 8-1 Denver Broncos. The Chiefs entered the game well rested after their bye week to face the Broncos at home. Entering the game there were concerns over Peyton Manning’s high ankle sprain and he came to the field with his right leg looking like it was in a boot. The Broncos Offensive Line deserves high praise for protecting Manning from the leagues #1 Defense and not allowing a single sack. The Broncos quarterback played well against the Chiefs, but for the first time all season he failed to throw multiple touchdowns. However, he completed 24 of 40 throws for 323 yards and a touchdown with a lost fumble.  Manning started 2 of 6 before getting hot. Two plays later he threw a 70-yard strike to Demaryius Thomas then hit Tight End Julius Thomas on a 9-yard slant for a touchdown. This was Manning’s 81st career 300-yard passing game, extending his NFL record. He’s gone over 300 yards in nine of 10 games this year.

With a controversial non-call at the end of the game, the Carolina Panthers beat the New England Patriots 24-20 on Monday night. Cam Newton seemed to come into his own as a leader and is playing at a higher level than he has in the past and is being considered a real top tier Quarterback in the league. The front seven for the Panthers were outstanding and the secondary was opportunistic. The teams first winning season since 2008 seems to be in the bag but this team wants more and if they continue to play well, they just might get it this year. Tom Brady is playing very well and completed 25 of 29 passes at one point and faces Peyton Manning at home next week in their 14th game against one another in their career.

There are currently three one loss teams in the NFL and the Indianapolis Colts have provided the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos with those losses. On Thursday night, the Tennessee Titans got off to an early lead with Chris Johnson scoring 2 touchdowns in the first quarter. The second quarter was a battle of the kickers with Adam Vinatieri kicking a 48 and a 30 yard field goal while Rob Bironas kicked one of his own from 25 yards out.  The third quarter was all Colts action with Donald Brown running in a touchdown and then Andrew Luck ran in a touchdown, his 4th of the season. Vinatieri kicked a 50 yard Field Goal giving the Colts 17 points in the quarter and the Colts led 23-17 at that point. Early in the fourth quarter, Bironas kicked a Field Goal from 38 yards and with 3 minutes left in the game, Donald Brown ran in his second touchdown of the day.  The Titans got the ball back and Delanie Walker caught a 19 yard pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick bringing the score to 30-27 with just a minute left.  The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Colts who ran out the clock for the win.

2013 NFL Week 10 Review

WEEK 10 REVIEW

This week the Denver Broncos started where they left off before the bye week with their power house offense led by Peyton Manning. Manning continues to maneuver his offensive unit down the field with regularity and ease. The San Diego Chargers trailed the Broncos 21-6 at the half and put up 14 points in the second half but it was not enough to overcome the Broncos losing 28-20. In the game Peyton Manning threw 3 Touchdowns to his seemingly new favorite receiver Demaryius Thomas who now has 9 receiving Touchdowns this season. With that, the Denver Broncos now have 3 receivers with 9 Touchdowns each accounting for 27 of Manning’s 33 passing Touchdowns this season. At the very end of the game there was a scary moment as a low tackle took Manning down and he was visibly hobbled as he limped around. An MRI on Monday showed he did not further injure his ankle and should be ready to go when the Broncos face the undefeated and well rested Kansas City Chiefs coming off of their bye week.

Nick Foles once again led the Philadelphia Eagles in the place of injured Quarterback Michael Vick who is still nursing a sore hamstring. Foles and the Eagles beat the Green Bay Packers 27-13 and Foles picked apart the Eagles secondary finding his new favorite target Riley Cooper for another 2 Touchdowns and 102 yards receiving. The rushing game of the Eagles was suppored mainly by LeSean Jackson who posted 155 rushing yards averaging 6.2 yards per carry. The win brings the Philadelphia Eagles to 5-5 for the season and still in good position in the NFC. It is hard to believe that Foles could lose the starting job back to Michael Vick when his hamstring is healthy at this point but crazier things have happened in the NFL. Foles is proving to be a tremendous asset and has played in 7 games throwing for 1,256 yards and 16 Touchdowns with 0 Interceptions so far this year.

On Thursday, it looked like the Washington Redskins would beat the Minnesota Vikings when the game went to half-time with the Redskins leading 24-14.  The Vikings came back with  a vengeance in the second half scoring 20 points while holding the Redskins to just 3 points in the half. The Redskins ended up losing the game 34-27 leaving the Washington Redskins at 3-6 for the season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Jacksonville Jaguars both posted their first wins of the 2013 season in Week 10. The Jaguars beat the Tennessee Titans 29-27 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Miami Dolphins handing them their 5th loss of the season.

The Baltimore Ravens beat the Cincinnati Bengals in Overtime 20-17. The first half was dominated by the Bengals as they shut out the Ravens with 17 unanswered points. The pep talk in the Ravens locker room and adjustments made at halftime proved to be more than the Bengals could handle and the Ravens scored 3 points in the third quarter and another 14 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to tie the game and force it into overtime. The Ravens moved the ball and Justin Tucker scored the game winning Field Goal when he booted the ball 46 yards through the uprights for the win giving the Baltimore Ravens their 4th win of the season and taking the Cincinnati Bengals to 6-4 just past the halfway point in the season.
